A historic first: Balmoral Castle opens its doors to the public for the first time
The 1st of July 2024 marked a monumental occasion in the history of Balmoral Castle as its doors were opened to the public for the very first time.
This event, long anticipated by historians and royal enthusiasts alike, represents a significant chapter in the life of the iconic Scottish estate, and is part of the estate’s ambitions of moving into a new era of openness and looking towards the future.
Balmoral Castle, a beloved residence of the British Royal Family since it was purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1852, has long been shrouded in a certain mystique. Known for its stunning architecture and the beautiful surrounding landscapes of the Cairngorm Mountains, the castle has long been the private Highland Home of the Royal Family, a place of both personal and historical significance.
All welcome
With that in mind, the decision to open the castle’s interiors to the public was momentous for several reasons. Firstly, it gave an unprecedented opportunity to visitors to step inside a private Royal residence that has played host to countless moments of private and public significance. From state affairs to intimate family gatherings, the rooms of Balmoral have witnessed a rich tapestry of history, now accessible to all.
This historic opening also marked a new chapter in the Castle's engagement with the public. While the grounds and certain parts of the Estate have been open to visitors for many years, the unveiling of the interior spaces signified a deeper connection with the heritage and legacy of the British monarchy. It allowed guests to experience firsthand the grandeur and personal touches that define Balmoral, from the intricately decorated drawing rooms to the royal bedrooms and private studies.
The introduction of new amenities designed to enhance the visitor experience, including the launch of the new restaurant, offered guests a taste of seasonal and locally sourced cuisine, all within exquisitely designed interiors that blend antique charm with contemporary elegance.
Opening Balmoral Castle's interiors was not merely about allowing public access; it was about sharing a piece of living history, a symbol of continuity and tradition, with the world. This historic occasion has undoubtedly enriched the cultural tapestry of Scotland and offered a unique glimpse into the private life of the British Royal Family, ensuring that Balmoral's legacy continues to be cherished by future generations.
Here is a look back at that historic day…

The day, graced with mostly sunny weather and a few gentle sprinkles of rain, offered a splendid backdrop for the historic launch of the interior guided tours.
As the morning dew lifted, a bagpiper in traditional attire stood proudly on the lawn before the castle's main tower. This enchanting start set the tone for what would be a memorable day.
Stepping through the grand entrance, visitors were greeted by the elegance that has characterised Balmoral Castle for generations. The guided tour revealed the castle's rich history and opulent interiors, providing an unparalleled glimpse into its storied past.
